Located on a scenic peninsula just north of Portsmouth and Established in 1986 as the Cabrits National Park, this site occupies 1,313 acres of land and is best known as the site of Fort Shirley a large 18th-century British garrison that once housed 600 soldiers.
The park protects tropical forests, coral reefs and wetlands. Cabrit is an extinct volcano that was once its own island, separate from mainland Dominica. It was connected to Dominica by the sweeping in of material from Douglas Bay and Prince Rupert Bay. Some stone ruins remain half-hidden in the jungle and are fun to explore. The Fort is now used for various functions such as Weddings, Receptions,
Concerts and other events.
